When Germaine Greer issued a warning to reality TV star Katie Price – saying she didn’t think the former glamour model would ‘make old bones’ – she must have anticipated a speedy response.

And sure enough, Price immediately showed off the debating skills that earned her so much praise last week, with a string of tongue-in-cheek tweets.

Outspoken feminist, Greer, told a sell-out audience at The Gate in Roath, Cardiff that too many young women look up to the self-styled businesswoman, who ‘triumphed’ in a highbrow debate about ambition at Cambridge University last week.

Greer also made a serious premonition that Price, one of the most photographed women in Britain, will self-destruct before reaching old age.

‘What has it cost Katie Price to be who she is? This young woman’s life has become a nightmare,’ said Greer.

‘You may say it’s of her own doing but it’s still a nightmare.’

Price took to Twitter to respond. She said: ‘Its interesting what Germaine Greer has said about me not making “old bones” and my life being a nightmare.

‘Well I have 3 beautiful children so i would never say my life is a nightmare. I have regrets, hopes and fears but don’t we all??’

The paparazzi favourite received loud cheers during the debate on Thursday night and her 10-minute speech in front of 800 students helped achieve a landslide victory of 497 votes to 39 for her side – defeating a team including Boris Johnson’s younger sister Rachel, editor of The Lady magazine.

She was arguing for the motion that ‘the only limit to female success is female ambition’.

Price, a mother-of-three, has built a merchandise empire based on her early topless modelling career. She’s published novels, has a clothing range and her own talent agency and clearly convinced the audience that hers was an achievement story with a happy ending.

But Greer – who was in Wales on Sunday night as part of an Audience With series at the arts centre, an event attended by WalesOnline – said had she been on the opposing side, she would have ‘beat’ the millionaire former I’m A Celebrity contestant – and reminded the audience that hers was anything but a dream model for living.

‘What kind of life is it to have cameras in your house all the time,’ said Greer, who described some of Price’s previous work as “inhuman, horrible and abject”.

‘It should have been easy for Rachel to have won. What a sad success story. The tabloids are waiting to annihilate Katie Price – is that a success story?’

In a comment that might have impressed the fame-hungry Price, who says her life motto is ‘there is no such thing as can’t – because I can’, Greer said, ‘There will only be one Kate Price, the others will just be wannabes’, but added that her notoriety comes at a hefty price. ‘She hasn’t been allowed to become a woman,’ Greer commented.

‘This is a woman who never eats, she suffers from poly-surgery, her relationships with men have been devastating, she is surrounded by hangers-on. We have a terrible situation where young girls look at Katie Price and want that life, the pink wedding dress and the pink carriage… at what cost is that?

‘I don’t see Katie Price making old bones – unless she has some extraordinary epiphany, takes out those implants, has a steak and chips and starts enjoying her life.’

Price replied, again on Twitter: ‘I’ve taken her advice and maybe the first step to the ‘epiphany’ i apparently need – i had steak and chips tonight.

She then added: ‘Seriously tho, GG rightly commands great respect but we all live our lives. She did CBB so cant be totally against life in the public eye.

‘I think her life would be better with some pink high heel shoes, but I doubt she will agree.’

Greer, who was celebrating her 73rd birthday, also addressed issues from the PIP implants scandal which she described as ‘veiled misogyny’ to the ‘commercial pornography’ of Western culture.

She encouraged women to learn to enjoy their leisure time, adding that the future facing them is darker than when she was campaigning for equal rights in the ’60s.

When asked her opinion about Barry-born Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the Australian native said she was ‘a good kid’.

She added: ‘I like how she lives with her boyfriend, doesn’t have kids, and doesn’t apologise for it.’

I just adore her recent backtrack on all the foolish philosophical nonsense she has put forward over the years… e.g. “having sex was like having a broomstick shoved up your ****” I have no respect for all the so called “feminist” claptrap she has espoused over all these years… Guesss what! her life now revolves around recounting her sexual musical groupie experiences… Sad woman she is.
