Shoe maestro Nicholas Kirkwood has slammed The Duchess of Cambridge for her conservative taste in footwear.
The designer who is known for his extreme creations favoured by Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker, spoke out in an interview with The Daily Beast.
‘She just wears too much high street stuff. I know she’s trying to be democratic, but I don’t know how many pairs of LK Bennett you can wear.’
Designer Nicholas Kirkwood, left, wishes Kate would swap her trademark pumps for something more regal
‘She does occasionally come out and is wearing McQueen or something like that. It’s like, “Do that more! You’re meant to be a princess-y type of person, so act like one!”’
However, the public can’t get enough of Kate’s taste and the Kate effect, as it is known, is cited as a key factor in the 17 per cent profit rise L.K.Bennett announced earlier this year.
This Nicholas Kirkwood collaboration with Keith Haring could be just the thing for Kate’s next royal engagement
‘She has accelerated sales for us — when she does wear something, it always seems to go on a waiting list,’ said L.K. Bennett’s US president, Tony DiMasso, who has just opened the first New York store for the British brand.
Despite his comments, Kirkwood is also enjoying Stateside success.
He opened his first standalone boutique in London’s Mount Street last year has just launched a New York flagship in SoHo’s Meatpacking District.
This year he will collaborate with fashion designers Erdem, Peter Pilotto and Prabal Gurung.
He is also to set to launch his own e-commerce site.
‘It’d be great if she (Kate) did wear my shoes,’ Kirkwood commented wistfully.
He has created a special ‘Pearly Queen’ shoe for Selfridges’ in honour of the royal jubilee celebrations to go on sale this month.
This could just be the opportunity Kate has been waiting for…
Kate may play it safe but her penchant for L.K.Bennett pumps has sent the chain’s profits soaring
Perhaps these were the shots of Kate that Nicholas Kirkwood had in mind when he accused The Duchess of not being princessy enough
