Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) – An Afghan mother has given birth to sextuplets – three girls and three boys – in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. She was unaware that she was carrying more than one child.

The doctors said it was her first pregnancy. They described the births as an extremely rare event as the women delivered the six children without any fertility treatment. The children are fine but all are underweight; one weighs only 700 grams.

The mother’s age was given as 24 by the BBC and 22 by Reuters.

Provincial Health Director Mirwais Rabi said that the sextuplets are under observation by a special team of nurses and doctors at the hospital.

The mother, who is shocked and exhausted by the birth of six children, is in good health, the hospital authorities said.
